Health and Social Care, Level 3

Examination Board: OCR Cambridge Technical

The level 3 Cambridge Technical in Health and Social Care is an exciting vocational course that is suitable for students wishing to enter a range of professions caring for, and working with people.

Who is this qualification for?

The OCR Cambridge Technical Diploma in Health and Social Care is aimed at students who

  • Want to follow higher education and careers in medical professions for example, nursing, paramedic science, midwifery and social work.
  • Want to progress to employment in related fields where caring for and working with people is central. This includes other careers in the area of medicine as well as working with children, the elderly, people with disabilities, those suffering mental illnesses or in the area of youth work.

Course Structure and Assessment:

This level 3 course has the same weighting as two A-levels and carries the equivalent points. Therefore D*D* (Distinction) is worth 112 UCAS points, the same as two A* A-levels. The course is taken over two years and should be studied alongside another traditional A-level subject. Seven units on the course are internally assessed by assignments and five units externally assessed by examinations. The units are of 30, 60 or 90 teaching hours, to allow learners to develop breadth and depth of knowledge. Each year six different units are studied.

A level 1: Extended Certificate.

These units are studied in year 12

  • Building Positive Relationships in Health and Social Care
  • Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care
  • Health, Safety and Security in Health and Social Care
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care
  • Infection Control or The Impact of Long-Term Physiological Conditions
  • Public health

A level 2: Diploma.

These units are studied in year 13

  • Safeguarding
  • Personalisation and a person- centred approach to care
  • Sexual Health, Reproduction and Early Development Stages
  • Creativity and Activity for Children and Young people or Supporting people with Mental Health Conditions
  • Supporting people with Learning Difficulties

Career Pathways

Past students have progressed to studying degrees in Adult and Child Nursing, Midwifery, Paramedic Science. Nursery and Primary School Teaching. Social work, Land Management and also taken gap year apprenticeships in Primary Schools as Classroom Assistants.
